Computer-Technical Examination in a Fraud Case Involving a Trading Platform

Jurisdiction: Russia

Situation:

The complainant was engaged in currency trading on the Forex market using specialized software/service that allowed for balance top-ups, withdrawals, and trading.

After losing several million rubles during a series of transactions, the individual filed a police report, claiming that the software and service did not actually provide access to Forex trading. According to the claim, the money never left the organization and the platform was fraudulent.

The task was to determine whether the software actually provided access to Forex trading, whether it had been used from the complainant's computer, and whether deposits/withdrawals were made from the complainant’s electronic account using the service.

Our Solution:

An analysis was conducted on the data storage devices used in the complainant’s laptop, along with a review of the user’s personal account, event logs, network connection data, and interactions with Internet resources.

CSI Group experts delivered a definitive conclusion confirming that the software and its servers did indeed interact with the Forex trading platform. This helped resolve the case by disproving the complainant’s allegations, ultimately preventing the company and its employees from facing criminal liability and protecting them from significant financial and reputational damage.
